Sweatshirts Done Right: American Giant

A while back I spoke on my experience running a Tough Mudder, which I guess you could say was FYGblog’s unofficial entrance into discussing active/sportswear (ie workout and gym clothes).  Around the same time I was contacted by the good people at American Giant to review some of their products.  At first I was hesitant but I ended up agreeing to do a review, and am glad I did so.

When I first went on the American Giant site I liked the simple and to the point layout.  I especially liked how the measurements of the model wearing the clothing was disclosed so one can get an idea of how any given item will fit.  However, I was a bit taken aback by the price of the sweatshirts (mind you, mine was provided but speaking from the viewpoint of a consumer), $59-89.  I decided on a heather grey crew neck, as I thought I would get the most use out of it.  I was between a medium and large but was encouraged by the AG to go for the large, glad I listened to them as a medium would be to small (my body measurements are as follows for reference: shoulders 18″, chest 41″, waist 34″, sleeve 34″ (to thumb knuckle)).

Upon receiving the sweatshirt I was impressed with the quality of the cotton, design and fit of the sweatshirt.  I started to see why the price tag was high.  The only fit issue I have is that I need to roll the cuff in half, as the sleeve is too long, however, I have to do this with most sweatshirts I own.  The raglan sleeves speak to the active side of the sweatshirt as in my opinion they allow for better mobility.  Additionally, the gussets on the both sides (as seen above) allow for a better fit.  Since the sweatshirt has arrived I have given it some pretty solid wear and have washed it a few times.  I have not noticed shrinkage, which is good considering the sweatshirt has been preshrunk.  I expect and hope that it will last for years to come.

Admittedly and understandably, the high price tag may not be for everyone; but as far as I can tell the price is really the only downside.  However, I think it is mostly justified given the fit, comfort and quality (extra points for being made in America).  Noticeably better in each of the three categories than any of the university and school sweatshirts I own.  Given all of this I fully endorse American Giant sweatshirts.  If you have any questions of thoughts of your own, sound off in the comments.

Regards,

JLJ

Note: FYGblog did receive material compensation for reviewing American Giant.  In the future, there will also be a review of their t-shirts.
